Latest HMRC glitch excludes tax demands

A glitch within HMRC's self-assessment system surrounding some taxpayers' payments on account will not be resolved until 31 July 2019 at the earliest.
The Revenue has experienced a string of computer errors in recent months, with the latest problem resulting in some taxpayers not receiving tax demands for their 2018/19 payments on account.
This issue applies to both a taxpayer's online personal tax account and to paper statements of account issued by the tax authority.
A similar problem occurred last year when some taxpayers' statements failed to show their payments on account for 2017/18, which were due to be paid by 31 July 2018.
Speaking to AccountingWEB, a spokesperson for HMRC said:
"We are aware of an issue with payment reminders for a small number of customers. Anyone who is affected should contact us and we'll put it right.
"Nobody will be charged additional interest due to this problem."
When pressed, the Revenue confirmed that no interest will be charged on the condition that all the tax owed for 2018/19 is paid in full by 31 January 2020.
