Millions receive council tax refund

More than 16 million households in the UK have received a £150 council tax refund from the Government to help with the rising cost of living.

Around 90% of eligible households have received the rebate, with 16.6m people being handed the payments at the end of July.

Figures show that councils have paid £2.5bn to households in council tax bands A-D, an increase of £500m on the previous month.

For those who have not received the money via direct debit, there are systems in place to distribute the rebate.

Anyone who hasn't received the reimbursement should check their local council's website.

The rebate is part of a £37bn support package to help those in need during the cost of living crisis.

Greg Clark, levelling up secretary, said:

"I'm pleased to see further progress in paying the council tax rebate out of the millions of households who are eligible to receive it.

"We want to make sure that those most in need receive the support that they are entitled to help households with the cost of living.

"This is why I am urging everyone to check their eligibility to receive the rebate and contact their councils if they have not."
